Columbia Riverkeeper
Columbia Riverkeeper is a wonderful organization that instigates or participates in many actions and activities.
Their site currently claims:
Riverkeeper unites and trains citizen volunteers across hundreds of miles to watchdog stretches of the Columbia and collect water quality data.
Riverkeeper organized the most powerful citizen coalition in a decade – farmers, foresters, fishermen, climate activists – to protect our property and estuary from the destructive Liquefied Natural Gas terminal at Bradwood. We won.
Riverkeeper worked with partners at the Umatilla, Yakama, Nez Perce, and Warm Springs tribes to pressure Oregon to adopt the nation’s strongest limits on toxic pollution under the Clean Water Act. Washington is next.
Riverkeeper challenged the giant coal companies to prevent one of the world’s largest coal export terminals from fouling the Columbia. This fight is far from over, but we prevailed in the first round.
Riverkeeper reduced toxic pollution in our river by stopping illegal discharges, pushing for better water quality laws, and enforcing existing rules.
In addition, they are an organization that keeps track of Hanford and their public meetings and issues. They do a good job of cutting through the obfuspeak of the bureaucracy.
Their events page is a good one to watch.
I [Ed Averill] haven't been to any of their organzational meetings, but I've enjoyed going to their rally/demonstrations and public information meetings.
