New for 2019

This is an attempt to pull together a bunch of climate information to set the stage for climate discussions going forward.

A new urgency is upon us. We need to take advantage of that to help make the world successful – as we are running out of chances.

2018 -- Long Hot Summer:

Many things happened to show that 2018 was going to bring surprises that foretell of more surprises coming.

  • Models were failing to include the fact that errors were likely to produce worse results more often than better.
  • Models were failing to include the fact that each aspect of climate change made another aspect's assumptions worse than it had accounted for.
  • Fire, floods, drought, fires, ...

2018 -- Oregon Climate Law Opportunities beyond Clean Energy Jobs

SB 978 was a law passed by the 2018 legislature asking the PUC to develop ideas about how they should be involved in modernizing our energy system.  How they should be evaluating opportunities to do the right things for the future...  They held a bunch of statkeholder meetings which had preparation materials, recorded participation, written-up reports, etc.  I am expecting at least one law to be generated enabling the PUC to become an imporant player in greening Oregon -- especially our electric grid.  We should be looking for the opportunity to help our legislators to push this forward.

AN IMPORTANT POINT IS THAT RESULTS CAN HAPPEN IN THIS VENUE THAT WILL PRODUCE RESULTS FASTER THAN Clean Energy Jobs because of it's 2 to 3 year administrative rule generation time.

2019 -- Oregon/Washington Climate Opportunities

Jordan Cove   -- See  page at Engineers for a Sustainable Future: http://esf-oregon.org/doku.php?id=actions_previous:jordan_cove_page

If you aren't familiar with this 15-year-old attempt to rape Oregon to support the Fossil Fuel industry with import/export activity, please learn about it.

This project is once again into the permit application process which gives citizens the opportunity to submit official comments.

This is a project that would be putting the skids on salmon production in the southwest corner of Oregon, as well as many other aquatic species for the sake of increasing fracking of natural gas in Canada and the U.S. and sending more natural gas to Asia than Oregon will be consuming as it decreases it's uses for the sake of climate.

The damage to the forest is considerable, also.  This is the timeframe in which we need to institute regenerative agriculture to Oregon, and forestry is one of the places that needs it, badly.  The normal management processes for pipelines are not regenerative.

Methanol -- another way to export "natural gas".

Wood alcohol can be fairly easily produced from natural gas, which is methane.  Wood alcohol is much easier to ship.  It is the stuff there were so many stories about, where people addicted to grain alcohol would use it for a quick fix and kill themselves, or worse -- damage themselves with brain/nerve damage or lose their sight.

There is an attempt by China to get us to create the world's largest methanol plant in the US, then ship the result to China.  The current excuse for this is to use it as the key building block of plastics.

This currently active proposal at Kalama, Washington would plan to consume about 1/2 as much methane as all of Washington does.

There are permit plays in action, now.  Read up about it at: The Engineers for a Sustainable Future Kalama Methanol Plant Terminal Page

A previous proposal to do this same thing at Tacoma, Washington was actually defeated. (Remember, the "Thin Green Line" has defeated 23 and counting Export Terminals to date.)  And, in case Kalama fails, there is a proposal in the wings to do the same thing at Port Westward near St. Helens in Oregon.
